January 28: Fort Morgan burning
A man walks through the site of a controlled burn at Fort Morgan in Gulf Shores, Ala. The area was popularly used by birdwatchers.
Officials said the burn was a safety precaution taken against thick underbrush in the area. Bird watchers contend that the brush in the area was used by migratory birds to rest.
